Ratanak is having an impact.

While Ratanak is not mentioned in this story it is exciting to note that we have been involved in developing and or are currently funding every project featured. It is not about empire building for Ratanak. It is about having an impact on the lives of kids in Cambodia. Many featured in this piece are friends whom YOU support. I hope you are encouraged by lives changed.

Blessings. Brian.

CTV W5 video Canadians travelling abroad to have sex with children is an abhorrent and shocking offence, punishable under Canada's Criminal Code. But are some Canadians getting away with this crime? Canada's so-called child sex-tourism law is supposed to punish Canadians who travel overseas to have sex with children. It's a law that has been on the books since 1997, but in more than a decade only three Canadians have been convicted.

W-FIVE takes an in-depth look at the unprecedented international investigation and arrest of Donald Bakker - Canada's first conviction under the law, and asks why Canadian authorities aren't doing more to catch its pedophiles overseas.

GETTING INVOLVED: (updated June 10, 2009)

Piano concerts, bake sale and garage sale! Ratanak supporters in Toronto and Ottawa are stepping up to do what they can in bringing awareness and raising funds to help Cambodia. Please continue to partner with us in your creativity. We’d love to resource you with brochures and other promotional material as you share the cause of The Ratanak Foundation in your local community.

Toronto: June 10, 2009 Piano Concert
7pm at Runnymede United Church – 432 Runnymede Rd, Toronto.

A piano teacher who is actively involved with the Ratanak group in Toronto has gathered together her piano students to do a concert fundraiser. These young students, ages 5-18, are the same ages as the girls in Cambodia who are being sold into violence and abuse. If you’re in the area, it’d be fantastic to support their efforts by attending. As she has said, “We will celebrate the gift of our children here in Canada and at the same time we remember the suffering of the children in Cambodia”.

Ottawa: Garage Sale/Bake Sale

The Ratanak group in Ottawa has pulled together to put on a successful community event. The weather turned out well and the Garage/Bake sale not only raised $387.75 but brought about a lot of interest and awareness about The Ratanak Foundation and Cambodia. Special thanks to those who donated items and baked the yummy goodies which turned out to be a huge success. Thanks also to those who coordinated and did all of the arrangements and to those who helped out on the day of the sale.

Going the extra mile to help exploited children

If you have an idea of a fundraiser you would like to do for The Ratanak Foundation please do not hesitate to contact us.

The above article mentions Larry, who is running a marathon - we know that is not for everyone. But consider what skills and interests you have; maybe a bake sale, sponsered walks or sporting events etc. Larry has maximized his efforts by using the local media. You too could organize an activity within your church or community thereby bringing increased awareness about child exploitation and the work of The Ratanak Foundation. Generally local media is interested in an international issue with a local twist.

If you and your friends come up with a fundraiser its worth a call to a local editor. Please be sure to contact us as The Ratanak Foundation can supply brochures, DVDs and a fact sheet to assist.

Our thanks for your help for the people of Cambodia.

What does Ratanak Mean?

Ratanak - the name of the girl who died in hospital as there was no medication to save her.The Ratanak Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing help and hope to the Khmer people of Cambodia.

Ratanak means precious stone or gem in the Khmer language. In this case Ratanak was the name of a little girl who, in late 1989, lay in a hospital in north west Cambodia. As her mother looked on, the doctors tried to save her life. There was no medication or medical equipment available to save her.

The Ratanak Foundation is dedicated to bringing spiritual hope to the Khmer people by assisting Cambodia rebuild the social and medical services which would have saved the life of the little girl named Ratanak.

Cambodia's Pain: Our Response

The goal of the Ratanak Foundation is simple: To equip the people of Cambodia as they struggle to rebuild their country, and in so doing show them the love of Jesus Christ in a tangible way.

Recognizing the complexities of a country in transition, the Ratanak Foundation has invested considerable time in understanding the tragedies through which the Cambodian people have suffered. We have also actively sought out the very best agencies to work with, agencies that truly understand and love the people.
