April 17th, 1975 was declared by the Khmer Rouge as Day One - Year Zero. "Two thousand years of Cambodian history are now meaningless," they told the people of Cambodia. The capital, Phnom Penh, was emptied out. It is estimated that 2 million Cambodians died by starvation, torture or execution.
